What is the best way to clean a humidifier?

My mother used to clean the humidifier’s water tank with antibacterial dish soap, such as Dawn. She’d scrub it with a clean sponge and a bottle brush whenever she could. I did something similar for a while, but I wanted to take it to the next level.

I laid it aside after cleaning it with dishwashing liquid. I then thank the water tank and pour out all of the water. Instead of immediately drying it, I take about 14 cup of vinegar and swivel it around the base of the humidifier for a few minutes. Then I thoroughly rinse it with clean water.

I use a bottle brush and Q-Tips to clean the pink growth in the humidifier’s crevices. The overall product is fantastic. Take it a step further by rinsing with vinegar and water once more. Allow it to air dry completely before storing it so that it is ready to be utilized for another sick event.

Should you replace or clean your humidifier?

I can’t say that I cleaned the humidifier every time it started to turn pink. Instead, I’d swap it out. To be honest, I didn’t have the time to clean it and decided it was better to replace it. Understandable, it wasn’t the most environmentally responsible thing to do, but I had to limit my time wisely. When I told a friend about my bizarre humidifier funding problem, she thought I was insane and taught me this vinegar method. Thank god for her, because I am now officially saving money!!! Really… this isn’t a joke.
