When it comes to producing a beverage, all Nespresso machines work in the same fundamental way, however some offer additional features or larger water tanks.

Nespresso produces two types of coffee capsules to fit the various machines it manufactures.

Any Nespresso Original series machine employs cylindrical dome-shaped capsules that resemble the disposable individual liquid coffee-creamer packages sold in some restaurants.

Hemisphere-shaped capsules are used in the Vertuo series.

These devices employ two distinct brewing technologies. To brew espresso-style drinks, the Original series has a high-pressure technology. The Vertuo line employs “centrifusion,” which combines centrifugal force with water infusion when the capsule is rapidly spun in the machine. The Vertuo range also includes beverages larger than an espresso or lungo (which utilize more water during the brewing process), such as a regular cup of coffee.

Prior to First Use

Whatever style of coffee brewing you like, you’ll want to know how to thoroughly clean your coffee maker before using it. Before the first usage of a Nespresso machine, it must be thoroughly washed inside and out. It’s as easy as brewing a couple batches of hot water in the device.

Step 1: Rinse the reservoir.

Rinse the reservoir, then fill it almost to the top with fresh tap water. If you removed the reservoir to add water, replace it on the rear of the Nespresso machine.

Step 2: Get the Nespresso Machine Ready

If you haven’t previously, connect the Nespresso machine. Turn on the unit by pressing the “lungo” button. When the Nespresso is ready to brew, the lights will flash and then turn on steadily.

Step 3: Don’t Forget About the Mug!

To capture the hot water, place a large mug, such as a travel mug, on the tray in front of the Nespresso unit.

Step 4: Start the Rinse Cycle

To begin rinsing the machine, use the “lungo” button. Run three more “lungo” cycles after the first to completely rinse the unit. Once the hot water in the mug has cooled, discard it.

Making a Espresso

Step One: Examine the Water Reservoir

Examine the water reservoir on your Nespresso machine. Fill it halfway or with enough water to create at least two espresso beverages if it is empty or nearly empty. Keeping extra water in the tank assures that you’ll have plenty for another cup or two.

Step 2: Start the machine.

To turn on an Original series Nespresso machine, push the “espresso” or “lungo” button, or the “on” button on a Vertuo series machine. The “on” button is the one on top with the image of a coffee cup. It is the machine’s single such button. The Nespresso machine is ready to use when the device’s light shines steadily.

Step 3: Position the Cup

Place your espresso or coffee cup on the front tray of the Nespresso machine. Some Vertuo models include an adjustable tray that may raise a tiny espresso cup closer to the spout that pours hot beverages. Set the tray in the desired location on such a model before placing the cup above it.

Step 4: Place the Coffee Capsule in place.

To access the coffee capsule port on an Original machine, lift the lever. Turn the lever on the head to “unlock,” then lift the head to open it on a Vertuo model. In the capsule port, insert the desired coffee capsule. They will only fit in one way on original machines, as shown on the device. The dome side of a Vertuo machine must be facing down. To begin brewing on an Original machine, press the lever down, or close the lid of the Vertuo and slide the lever to the “lock” position. After brewing an espresso or a lungo beverage on an Original machine, the brew will immediately cease. When not in use, all Nespresso machines turn off automatically.

Step 5: Choosing a Beverage Size for a Vertuo

If you want to make espresso, lungo, or a half cup of coffee, you must manually stop the Vertuo-series device. As the device dispenses coffee, press the “on” button to stop it after the liquid has reached the desired depth in your cup. To restart dispensing, press the same button once more.

Step 6: Release and Discard Spent Capsules

Because Nespresso machines use single-use coffee capsules, they must be removed from the machine after each use. Each machine features a receptacle for discarded capsules. To release the capsule into the bin on an Original device, simply lift and lower the lever. Move the lever to the “unlock” position on a Vertuo model and elevate the head to expel the capsule into the trash.

Step 7: Basic After-Use Care

When you’ve done brewing coffee and the Nespresso unit has turned off, it’s time to clean it. Empty the spent-capsule receptacle into the trash or one of Nespresso’s recycling bags as part of the company’s recycling program. Using a moist towel, wipe clean the removable coffee cup tray. Wipe down any additional sections of the device’s exterior that require it. Also, empty the water tank.
