Is Ketchup Mac and Cheese Good?

Your taste buds and preferences will determine whether or not mac and cheese with Heinz ketchup tastes good to you. Those who prefer it claim that others frequently stare at them as they consume this unique dish. And it’s generally a look that’s nearly comparable to disdain!

Nonetheless, some people, including celebrities, think the combo is excellent.

Is that correct?

Is Ketchup a Good Addition to Mac & Cheese?

Yes! According to certain recipes, ketchup (along with other fascinating ingredients) is used to lend a touch of “zip” to an otherwise cheesy and possibly dull dish.

Others believe that adding ketchup to macaroni and cheese can aid when the macaroni becomes crusty on the edges or loses moisture due to overcooking. To that aim, the ketchup adds wetness as well as that trademark tomatoey-sweet flavour to please everyone who tries it.

Macaroni and Cheese with Ketchup

Though ketchup (which, by the way, is not a smoothie) on macaroni and cheese is primarily an American concept, you may be shocked to learn that it is also popular in other nations. In Canada, for example, a macaroni and cheese recipe with ketchup and/or tomato sauce for extra flavour can be found. This dish is also known as “Canadian spaghetti” or just “Mac & cheese” in Canada. And, while it may not always resemble conventional American mac and cheese in appearance, it does in terms of contents.

Ketchup-Slathered Macaroni and Cheese

Though eating macaroni and cheese with ketchup may seem out of the ordinary, it is important to remember that many people enjoy the tasty combination when the ketchup is put in (rather than drizzled over the top).

Please don’t get us wrong. Many people like to drizzle ketchup over their macaroni and cheese in the same way that they would drizzle ketchup over a hot dog. When it comes to ketchup on macaroni and cheese, though, not everyone takes this way.

Some individuals choose to mix the ketchup into the macaroni cheese sauce instead. As a result, the sauce becomes tangier, sweeter, and a deeper orange (bordering on red) colour than usual. Though this may seem like an unusual flavour combination to some, it may be more recognisable to older generations, as this type of mac and cheese is commonly referred to as “old fashioned” by younger generations.

Is Ketchup Used in Mac & Cheese?

Remember that it’s quite normal—and even rather common—for individuals to eat Kraft mac and cheese with Heinz ketchup. Just keep in mind that not everyone enjoys their mac and cheese ketchup in the same manner. Some people want it poured over their mac and cheese, while others like it mixed in, and yet others like it on the side.

It all depends on the individual!

  • 1 package elbow noodles
  • 1 pound mild cheddar cheese, shredded (use sharp for stronger flavor)
  • 12 large onion (diced)
  • 1 can tomato sauce (8 oz)
  • 12 teaspoon salt
  • 34 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 quart ketchup

Directions

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Boil about 3/4 of your box of elbow macaroni noodles once the water is hot.

  • Turn off the heat in the pot.
  • To the pot, add the noodles, salt, pepper, onion, tomato sauce, and ketchup. Stir until thoroughly combined.
  • Place half of your noodle sauce mix in a 2-3 quart casserole dish and top with 12 of the cheese.
  • Then, on top of that layer, add the remaining noodles and cover with cheese again.
  • Bake the ketchup mac and cheese for about 15 minutes, or until the top is brown and bubbling.
  • Allow 10 minutes to cool before serving.
  • Enjoy!
